A Comic Book inspired by 15X NHRA Funny Car Champion – John Force
Destination Force
Writers: Jule Selbo, Bob Engels, Ashley Force Hood and Josh Miller
Illustrator: Doug Sirois
The Inspiration:
My dad, John Force, is one of the winningest drivers in motorsports history, and also one of the most energetic, entertaining and bigger than life personalities in the sport of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing. We joke that it’s like a tornado when he arrives, and craziness usually follows. The fans love how outgoing and outspoken he is, and his passion for drag racing shows in all that he does.
I’ve seen him on fire, upside down, backwards and exploding at 300 miles per hour over the years. He always walked away from these crashes with a great story to tell…and some missing eyebrows. Years ago, he raced a special themed Superman car and my sisters and I, as children, thought that he must have super powers!
In 2007 we learned what he was really capable of. He had the worst crash of his career when his funny car broke in half and tumbled over and over through the finish line at over 300 miles per hour. It was a miracle he survived, and doctors worried he’d never walk again. But to watch his recovery, his return to the funny car, and a few years later, his amazing comeback as he won his 15th NHRA Championship on the last day of the 2010 season, we realized the true meaning of Super Man!
The Creation:
In his 30 + years of racing, dad has some amazing stories from his early days in racing, his time in Australia, and just the different crazy predicaments he’s gotten himself in. We decided our comic book story lines would be based loosely on real stories from his past. As dad always says, he doesn’t lie, he embellishes, and with this comic we hope to entertain you with tales from the man, the myth, the legend that is John ‘The Brute’ Force.
